This page is for kits that can be put together with inexpensive parts from all over the place. If you have any idea please let me know so I can place them here for everyone else to use and improve. I have posted a well known item with a few twists. You may also find a better way to do the same thing.
Here it is.
12 Volt Emergence Light
Parts List
1156 single element 12 volt auto tail light
Tail light receptacle
Beverage can with wide mouth opening (for a reflector)
Two pieces of #14 or 16 wire to the length you like.
Duct or electrical tape.
Wire coat hanger
Cut the beverage can in half about 2 inches below the top
(discard the bottom half)
Pull off the opener tab and remove the little button left on the top of the can.
Place a piece of tape around the cut portion of the can to prevent cuts.
Place the tail light receptacle in the mouth of the can.
All you have to do is squeeze the mounting prongs and place in the mouth of the
can. (it should fit perfectly) Take the bulb and place it in the receptacle.
Take one wire and attach it to the wire coming out of the receptacle. Use the second wire by pinching it inbetween the can and the receptacle it should hold just fine. If you would like it to be more secure us a little tape to hold the wires in place. Remember this is for emergency use. If it looks pretty you can always get BONUS points.
Use the wire coat hanger to make a stand to hang the light from.
Connect the light to a 12 volt battery/power supply any way you want to. I would suggest that you use the Anderson PowerPole connectors if you have any and that way you can connect to any device that will supply the necessary power or use an adaptor for whatever is needed..
The receptacle can be prepared in advance so that all you'll have to do is find a can when needed. I would also suggest that you use the hanger to connect to the receptacle and not the can reflector.
